Solar Cables – Making Renewable Energy Possible

Solar energy is a renewable source for power and has been making rapid strides in the last 10 years. The cost of production is coming down rapidly, hence it is becoming a strong alternative to conventional sources of power generation.

Solar energy is produced by exposing photovoltaic (PV) cells to the sun. The energy produced is stored in large capacitors which can be used as and when required. Generally, the electrical output from a single cell is small, so a number of cells are parallelly connected together in series to produce the required current and voltage, encapsulated usually with a glass cover and plastic sheet to form a module usually called a “panel”. The electricity generated by solar PV panels is used to remotely power equipment, recharge batteries, generate public lighting to solar heating.

Solar cables interconnect solar panels and other electrical components of a photovoltaic system. Solar cables are the arteries of the solar PV (photovoltaic) system, required to transport this electricity. One of the most important aspect for the safety and longevity of every PV system is cable management.

Rugged Requirements

The quality of a solar project depends on the efficiency of its cabling system. These cables must withstand the extreme temperature conditions that they are exposed to, which in turn demands a resolute specification. As solar projects have a minimum life of 25 years, the components used for solar projects should be viable to support the expected life.

Choosing the right cabling is critical to proper functioning of the project. It is essential to use the correct solar cable size when connecting various components of a solar PV system. A proper cable size helps avoid overheating and ensures little energy loss. The size of a solar cable is directly dependent on the generating capacity of the solar module as well as the distance of the solar module from the load. The larger the capacity of the solar module or greater the distance, the bigger should be the cable size. Using an undersized cable not only poses a potential for causing a fire due to overheating but is also a code violation in most jurisdictions. Any frequent failure of solar cable will decrease the overall project efficiency. Thus, it is important to evaluate the solar cables at the time of design and installation, to ensure its functionality over a desired life span by conducting a series of tests.
Solar cables undergo a rigorous manufacturing and testing audit programme to deliver the most robust cabling solution with an anticipated lifespan of approximately 25 years. This is consistent with the expected life-cycle of solar projects.

Laying it Right

The solar cables provide the interconnection of photovoltaic power generation systems and the solar panel arrays. The cables are intended for a range of rooftop solar installations and solar farms.

The range of solar cables can be roof mounted or buried directly in the earth. Being halogen free, flame retardant with low smoke properties they ensure the safety of the inhabitants in the event of a fire. The special sheathing materials also ensure they are rodent proof and are perfectly suited for outdoor installations.

As solar cables are widely used outdoors, they are subject to direct sun radiation, air humidity and fierce winds. The solar outdoor cable range is designed to withstand severe environmental conditions and UV light exposure. The cables are robustly designed to be UV and Ozone resistant. They can withstand a large temperature range (-40°C to 90°C) when laid outside and are short-circuit proof even at high temperatures.

BS EN 50618 and H1Z2Z2-K

Solar cables are manufactured in accordance with various British and International Standards namely BS EN 50618 and meet harmonized standard of H1Z2Z2-K.
