Tuning Light as per the Circadian Rhythm

Did you know that the changing light from sunrise to sunset helps regulate our bodily functions through the wake-sleep cycle? This natural progression of brightness and light intensity has a direct impact on our well-being, making it crucial to replicate similar lighting tones indoors.

Aligning artificial light with natural light rhythms is essential for promoting well-being and optimal functioning. When indoor lighting systems follow circadian patterns, they improve sleep quality, enhance alertness, boost productivity, and support overall health. In this article, we explore the significance of the circadian lighting concept and how LEDs are designed to mimic natural light, creating a comfortable and healthy living environment.

What is circadian lighting?

Circadian lighting is a system that mimics the natural changes in sunlight throughout the day, supporting the body’s 24-hour internal clock, or circadian rhythm. This rhythm regulates sleep patterns, amplifies alertness, enhances mood attentiveness, and boost productivity through the day. By aligning artificial lighting with these natural patterns, circadian lighting aims to improve overall health and well-being.

The concept of tunable lighting

Tunable lighting is an attempt to use the changeable properties of LEDs to mimic the natural progression of sunlight throughout the day. LED’s can deliver light from a range of warm (yellowish) to natural white and cool (bluish) tones. By adjusting the correlated color temperatures LEDs can be fine-tuned to replicate the natural light cycle in the room.

Decoding colour temperatures

Correlated colour temperature (CCT) refers to the specific color wavelength a light emits, which is measured in Kelvin (K). Colour temperatures ranging between 2700–3000 K are called ‘warm colours’ (yellowish light) and those over 5000 K are called ‘cool colours’ (bluish light). Warm light upto 3000 K ranges from orange to yellowish-white, and anything above this from 3100-5000 K emits bright white to bluish light also referred as cool white.

LED lighting can be programmed to gradually transition from warm to cool tones, promoting alertness during the day and relaxation in the evening. Also, occupants can adjust the color of light from warm to neutral to cool in varied spaces, to suit different applications, task needs, and personal preferences.

In addition to color tunable options, dimming controls and occupancy sensors have made LEDs a smart and sustainable lighting solution. Here below is an overview of colour temperatures suited for different rooms and tasks.

Intended use of Warm White Vs Cool White

Warm White light is recommended for

Living Rooms: To create a cozy, welcoming and comfortable space for socializing and unwinding.

Dining Rooms: To create a relaxed and intimate setting for meals and gatherings.

Bedrooms: To promote relaxation and help prepare for sleep.

Cool White light is recommended for

Kitchens: To ensure clear visibility for cutting ingredients and preparing food.

Bathrooms: Provide clear lighting that aids in grooming and personal care.

Home Offices and Study Areas: To enhance focus and productivity.

Workspaces: To improve concentration and reduce eye strain during detailed tasks.

Garages and Workshops: For bright, clear illumination that aids in precision work.

Commercial Spaces: To create an alluring and inviting atmosphere in retail shops, malls and other commercial settings.
