Earthing Rods: Buried Protectors for Deflecting Lightning

Earthing & Lightning Protection

During lightning strikes, any incidence of electrical surge can pose dangers of electrocution, jeopardizing life and property. To prevent this, earth rods are buried into the ground to diverge excess current towards the earth. Installed underneath, these earthing rods are unseen heroes that silently protect electrical systems from potentially dangerous voltage spikes caused by lightning power surges.

Electrical codes often mandate that grounding systems need to be installed by licensed electricians. In this article we highlight some important factors to keep in mind for installing earthing rods

Choice of material

As earthing rods act as a conductive path diverting unwanted electricity safely back into the earth, the choice of materials is important to prevent damage to equipment and even fires. Copper or copper-clad steel are preferred options due to their high conductivity and corrosion resistance properties.

Length of rod depends on type of soil

The effectiveness of an earthing rod depends on its length and the type of soil it’s driven into. Clay conducts electricity better than sand or rock, so shorter rods may suffice in clay. However sandy or rocky soil needs longer ones to make good contact. Generally, deeper is better. Aim for at least 8 feet (2.4 meters) but consult local regulations for specific requirements.

Utilize other grounding components

Earthing rods are most effective when used in conjunction with other grounding components like grounding wires and plates. This creates a comprehensive grounding system for maximum protection.

Obtain permits and follow safety regulations

Local regulations govern earthing rod installation. Hence it is recommended to obtain the necessary permits and ensure compliance. For complex systems, consider hiring an experienced electrician for safe and effective installation. After installation, have a qualified electrician test the grounding system’s resistance to ensure it meets safety standards.

By considering these factors, you can ensure your earthing rods provide optimal protection for your electrical system
